Archbishop of York given honorary degree

The Archbishop of York was awarded an honorary degree by the city's university in recognition of his outstanding humanitarian work.

A beaming Dr John Sentamu swapped his usual colourful vestments to dress down in a traditional gown and mortar board as he was made 'Doctor of the University' at the graduation ceremony on Thursday.

He was presented with the degree on stage by the University's Chancellor - and former Director General of the BBC - Greg Dyke in front of hundreds of students.

Accepting the award, the clergyman said: "It is a great personal honour for me to be receiving this honorary degree in the wonderful grounds of one of the top 10 universities in the UK."

He had graduates laughing when he finished: "To all the students here I pass on a word of advice given to a young Charles de Gaulle. Always maintain your initiative, exploit inevitability and never stand between a lamppost and a dog."

Paying tribute to Dr Sentamu, Rev'd Dr David Efird praised his "outstanding humanitarian work" and "charismatic leadership of his faith".
