British pilot first to set 100 world speed records
ROSS PARRY SYNDICATION: A British daredevil who was banned from fulfilling his dream of being a pilot due to illness when a teenager is to become the first man to break 100 aviation world speed records in his sixties.
Determined Steve Wood, 62, was upset when his vision of becoming a commercial pilot was cut short by kidney stones at 17.
He became a chartered surveyor instead, but always held an affection for planes and began building his own plane from scratch after gaining his licence in America later on in life.
Now he has smashed the record of 91 previously held by American adventurer Steve Fossett by setting his 101st.
He sets his records in the US, where he rubs shoulders with the likes of John Travolta at Spruce Creek 'fly-in' - th jet-setting community with a road on one side and a runway on the other.
Steve and wife Belinda, who remarkably doesn't like flying, rent out hangar space in the exclusive area, splitting their time between the States and their home town of Harrogate, North Yorks.
