Camels take to the turf at racecourse
A glorious summer's day at a renowned racecourse was a fitting backdrop for a rather different type of four-legged race - featuring CAMELS.
The bizarre spectacle on Friday was the brainchild of a firm of solicitors who came up with it as part of their annual corporate race event.
What started off as a dream soon turned to reality when they discovered that not only could they get the camels but that Doncaster Racecourse loved the idea as it would bring a smile to their punters and jockeys.
And it certainly did that, when four of the lanky, ungainly beasts took to the turf with professional horse jockeys astride them.
Around 12,000 spectators cheered them on as the same four camels took part in two races before the horses came on to the course for the afternoon race card.
Odds had been given on the camels and punters were having a flutter.
In both cases jockey James Doyle won on his bumpy steed, Gobi, negotiating the animal around the course with a subtle panache that proved the winning formula.
