Largest jellyfish in captivity in the world

ROSS PARRY SYNDICATION: A gigantic jellyfish with 3ft tentacles is now thought to be the largest in captivity in the world after being caught in British waters.

The eerie sea creature, an example of the largest species of jellyfish, was captured by accident by a lobster fisherman off the East Yorkshire coast.

Now the pink lion's mane jellyfish is stretching its huge tentacles in a special 'washing machine style tank' at its new home at The Deep in Hull, East Yorks.

Aquarist Tom Rowe said: "We were delighted to receive this wonderful creature.

"It is the first time I've seen a lion's mane jellyfish in the region and it is more than twice the size of any other jelly ever displayed at The Deep.

"As far as we know it is the largest jellyfish in the world in captivity."

Its bell is a huge 35.5cm in diameter and its tentacles are 90cm (3ft) long. The next biggest at the aquarium are the moon jellies, which have only a 15cm diameter bell.
