Penguins keep cool in the sweltering heat
Penguins at Scarborough Sealife and Marine Sanctuary are being hosed down to keep them cool in the sweltering heat that has enveloped the country.
The cute birds, who live at the centre in North Yorkshire, are often sprayed with water to keep them cool during the rising temperatures.
And the Humboldt penguins are not the only ones feeling the heat as the country cooked in temperatures reaching the high 20s.
Thousands made the most of the conditions over the weekend, flocking to beaches and parks or soaking up the rays with barbecues in the garden.
But those who went inside to watch England's World Cup knock-out game were left disappointed after the national team were beaten 4-1 by Germany.
One upset fan said: "I feel embarrassed to be wearing my England shirt, it was humiliating."
Forecasters have said much of the country will remain warmer than average for the rest of the week, especially in the south east where the mercury will stay in the high 20s through to Friday at least.
