Planning row after man built 'home' in back garden
ROSS PARRY SYNDICATION: An inquiry has taken place after a homeowner was given planning permission for a double garage with a granny flat but ended up building this palatial two-storey house in his back garden.
Furious residents in the suburb were speaking out against the "stand-alone family home" at a three-day public inquiry.
Council bosses want the property – which also includes a basement and a loft space with rooms – be demolished.
But owner Wajid Hussain, 35, has appealed the decision against the property which stands in the garden of his house in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorks.
The inquiry in Leeds last week heard that Mr Hussain had been given planning permission to build a double garage with a granny flat overhead back in 2007.
But in the second half of 2008 the inquiry was told that a "detached, two-storey building with a basement and rooms in the roof space" was built.
The independent inquiry will decide if a council enforcement notice and decision to refuse retrospective planning permission will stand.
A decision is expected later.
