Rare mutant lobster at Sealife Centre

This astounding picture shows 'Harley Quin' - the chequered lobster plucked from the seabed that is a rarity rated at odds of more than FIFTY MILLION-to-one.

This extra special shellfish, given the nickname thanks to his snappy red and black patterning, was retrieved by a stunned fisherman who passed it on to marine experts.

Staff at Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary, North Yorks., were left amazed at the find having never encountered a creature like him - and they have now given him a new home to save him from predators.

Senior aquarist Todd German said: “There have been unusual coloured lobsters found in the past.

“Blue, red and yellow individuals have all been found, but this one is the strangest anyone has ever heard of with one side black and the other side dull red.

“He’s a fifty-million-to-one mutant all the more remarkable because his two colours are separated by a near perfect straight line along the back of his carapace."
